Kindergarten Arts

Page history last edited by Brie Taylor 9 years, 11 months ago

Welcome! Thanks for coming to this website. The students in kindergarten this year are a very creative group of students. I have thoroughly enjoyed teaching them the arts. I am always surprised at how unique their interpretations are of the same art assignment.

Here are a few pictures showcasing some of the visual arts projects that the kindergarten students have done since January.

In January, the kindergarten theme was 'Winter'. In visual arts, the kindergarten students created a snowy scene after reading and acting out the book The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats.

We used 'puffy' paint, which is created by mixing 1 cup of shaving cream with 1 cup of glue.

When the students were learning about snowmen and shapes in their math and language activities, we did an arts project where the students brushed an Epsom salt/water mixture over their snowmen to create a frosty effect.

In February, we acted out The Mitten by Jan Brett for a drama activity. For art, the students designed a mitten that wouldn't get lost in the snow. They used pastels to create different patterns, shapes, and lines in their design. They painted over their pastel designs with watercolour paints.

In January and February, the kindergarten students also completed a health unit on nutritious foods. They learned a lot about the importance of choosing nutritious foods, especially fruits and vegetables. For an art activity, we looked at the shapes and colours of pretend fruits and vegetables and painted our favourites using watercolours. Here is a banana and a pear.

Since the kindergarten classes were learning about friendship in February, in art the students drew pictures of themselves playing with friends and then drew a self-portrait to remind them to be a good friends to themselves too.

The March theme in the kindergarten classrooms was Under the Sea, so in art all four kindergarten classes created ocean crafts. Each student's craft was added to the 'Under the Sea' mural in the kindergarten hallway. Come check it out if you can!

Here is what the mural looked like before the students added any of their crafts to it....

Here is the mural after week one and all of the 'bottom' sea creatures were added:

Here are pictures of the completed mural. The students worked hard on it for 2 weeks and did an excellent job on all of their crafts!

Below are pictures of the students' 'mini Under the Sea murals' that they created with pastels, watercolour paints, acrylic paints/bubble wrap for the bubbles, and streamer pieces for the seaweed.

For Earth Day, the kindergarten students created art with materials that had been left over from previous art projects. A display of their art was set up in the gym for the school's Earth Day Assembly on April 22. To make this art they used coffee filters, food colouring, markers, water sprayed on the coffee filters, paper, newspaper, and construction paper.
